Adam Winner: Evidents

August 13–September 13, 2020

Adam Winner (b. 1979) ushers the viewer into a serene, meditative state with his minimalistic works exploring the interaction light on surfaces and the nature of perception. His paintings invite us to linger and look again, for there are new visual possibilities with each shift in point of view of those who look at these works. His paintings waver in state of flux as the light plays upon the canvas, nudging our thoughts into motion with the shifting shadows that dance across the mostly monochromatic surfaces. Winner regards his paintings as personal reflections and memory traces of past events.

Chance plays no part in Winner’s paintings, for his approach is highly systematic. Compositional details are meticulously planned and positioned. His works are sparse and understated, yet rich in subtle combinations of materials and overlaid paint layers. Winner uses traditional materials: gesso and oil paint on linen. His creative process is based on his methodical use of materials and his intimate knowledge, acquired over time and through repetition, of their properties and behavior. He can identify and anticipate when, where, and how a given material will shrink or curl, working with the characteristics inherent in both warp and wept. The final form of his paintings is driven by his pursuit of beauty, while the three-dimensionality of his work sometimes challenges the notion of what is painting and what is sculpture.

Adam Winner graduated from Syracuse University in 2001. He has taken part in numerous group exhibitions both in the US, South America, and Europe. He debuted at Galerie Forsblom in 2016. Winner lives and works in Red Bank, New Jersey.
