Press Release

Galerie Forsblom is proud to present In October Ecstasy, an exhibition with new paintings by prominent Spanish artist Secundino Hernández (b.1975).

Hernández is known for his expressive paintings, deriving from the premise of figurative expression and abstract expressionism. The youthful energy of Secundino Hernández’s paintings has captured worldwide attention. Somewhere between figuration and abstraction, Hernández’s works are powerful in its insistence to lead the gaze across large canvases.

Radiating fascination with the creative process, Hernández’s works ground the visual power of painting firmly in the present. In his latest body of work, history appears fragmented, its components concealed or scattered. Splinters of color, layers of primer folding on the canvas – and in contrast – washed off and reduced paint, exposing the bare canvas that resembles cut outs. Hernández plays with the surface of the canvas and with our perspective of painting. Exclusive for the exhibition at Galerie Forsblom in Stockholm, a wallpaper picturing Hernández studio in Madrid is used as a background, tricking the spectator’s eye like a trompe l'œil.

Secundino Hernández graduated from the Universidad Complutense Department of Painting in Madrid, Spain. His most recent institutional solo exhibitions have been at the Yuz Museum, Shanghai (2015) and Maison Louis Carré, Bazoches-sur-Guyonne, France (2014). His work is included in numerous institutional and private collections, including National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, UK; Auckland Art Gallery, New Zealand; Museo Patio Herreriano, Valladolid, Spain; Helga de Alvear Foundation, Cáceres, Spain; The Rubell Family Collection, Miami, USA; Kunstdepot Göschenen, Switzerland and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada. Hernández lives and works in Madrid and Berlin. Galerie Forsblom has been representing Secundino Hernández since 2010.
