Kim Somervuori b. 1975

Biography

Born in Helsinki | Lives and works in Helsinki

Kim Somervuori’s paintings are characterized by an imaginatively rich visual language, a controlled undulating composition, and a rugged painterly touch combined with a strong, colorist palette. In his works, spatiality merges with layering, pronounced materiality, and themes that draw on art history, literature, subcultures, and phenomena of popular culture. Stylistically, his work moves between the expressive, the figurative, and the abstract. His paintings echo the American Neo-Expressionist tradition, which inspired Somervuori —a graffiti artist in the 1990s—to turn to fine art and embrace his own distinctive voice.

Kim Somervuori graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2011. He has held numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Finland and internationally. His works are held in numerous notable collections, including those of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, the Saastamoinen Foundation, and the Paulo Foundation. Somervuori received the William Thuring Prize in 2015 and the Finnish Art Society’s Young Artists’ Award in 2009.

Galerie Forsblom has represented Kim Somervuori since 2026.
