Overview
You are warmly invited to the opening of Kim Somervuori's exhibition Mingus on Thursday, May 7, 2026 from 5 to 7 pm.

Kim Somervuori approaches painting with unabashed curiosity. His process is relaxed and intuitive, embracing surprise as central to his practice. He draws thematic inspiration from a wide range of sources, from art history and literature to subcultures and popular culture. Stylistically, his work moves between the expressive, the figurative, and the abstract. Its pronounced materiality lies in rough, layered textures that possess a living quality, asserting their presence and drawing the viewer in. These textures, together with the contrastive elements of his seemingly unfinished visual vocabulary, create a sense of balance while subtly challenging it.

Urban landscapes are a recurring motif in his oeuvre: city skylines rise in silhouette, and abstract references to urban space emerge in the details. In his most recent works, traces of nature appear within concrete environments. Somervuori also incorporates letters, individual words, and short texts, often referencing songs, poems, or books. At times these function purely as visual elements; at others, they carry greater semantic weight. Meaning, however, is never paramount – expression ultimately takes precedence. His paintings echo the American neo-expressionist tradition, particularly the influence of Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988), whose work inspired Somervuori – a graffiti practitioner in the 1990s – to turn to fine art and embrace his own distinctive voice.

Kim Somervuori (b. 1975) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2011. He has held numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Finland and internationally. His works are held in numerous notable collections, including those of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, the Saastamoinen Foundation, and the Paulo Foundation. Somervuori received the William Thuring Prize in 2015 and the Finnish Art Society’s Young Artists’ Award in 2009.
