Biography

Born in Valencia, Spain 1942 | Lives and works in New York and Madrid

A master of painting, sculpting and printmaking, Manolo Valdés is one of the most established contemporary artists of Spain. Together with Juan Antonia Toledo and Rafael Solbes, Valdés formed Equipo Crónica, a Spanish manifestation of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, which lasted until Solbes death in 1981. After Equipo Crónica, Valdés found a new form of expression, drawing heavily from Old Masters such as Diego Velázquez and Francisco Goya, where he combines traditional motifs and compositions of art history in his work.

Valdés begun painting at the early age of 15, when he entered the Fine Arts Academy of San Carlos in Valencia, Spain. His work is included in such public collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Kunstmuseum in Berlin and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville, Spain.
