Danish artist, Per Kirkeby’s (p. 1938) vivid paintings on masonite constitute a world of organic forms and evocative colour. Kirkeby's paintings contain references to art history, such as 17th-century still life painting, as well as the artist's own observations of natural light and colour. The border between the organic and the abstract has fascinated the artist throughout his more than 50-year career.
Arctic geology studies at the University of Copenhagen (1964) have contributed to Kirkeby's art. He is known for his paintings and sculptures, films, architectural works and essays about art. Kirkeby is one of today's best-known contemporary artists.
