Press Release

Galerie Forsblom is pleased to take part in viennacontemporary’s Nordic Highlights with works by Heikki Marila (FIN), Reima Nevalainen (FIN), Peter Frie (SE) and Not Vital (CH).

Known for his large-scale oil paintings and intense themes – including biblical motifs, self-portraits and floral still-life compositions – Heikki Marila (b. 1966) is a leading figure on the Finnish contemporary art scene. His expressive paintings contain allusions to art history, and are typically infused with paradoxical drama that plays on contrasts.

Finland’s Young Artist of the Year 2016, Reima Nevalainen (b. 1984), paints collages, where human figures and nature coexist as equals. He combines paint with materials such as sand and paper, or scrapes away the paint to reveal contrasting surfaces underneath.

Swedish Peter Frie’s (b. 1947) paintings and sculptures are rooted in the still life and landscape tradition, particularly in their manner of portraying scenes as intensely emotional states.

Not Vital’s (b. 1948) conceptual works blur the boundaries of reality and the surreal. Moving masterfully between such diverse medias as sculpture, installation, painting and drawing, Vital combines the abstract and the figurative in a harmonious way creating a meditative atmosphere.
