Jacob Hashimoto – Path To The Sky

Santa Maria Della Scala, Siena, Italy

May 22 – September 30, 2025

Path to the Sky, an installation by Jacob Hashimoto (b. 1973), a New York-based artist with a globally recognized exhibition history, will be on view at Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, Italy. The installation is specifically designed with the museum’s architecture in mind and serves as a tribute to the city of Siena.

Hashimoto’s work guides the viewer through Corticella and Strada Interna, along a journey between heaven and earth—inviting our gaze toward a broader horizon. The piece resonates both physically and symbolically: once a sanctuary for pilgrims, the space now welcomes international artists and visitors alike.

Hashimoto’s art exists between sculpture and painting. His works combine the compositional techniques of painting with traditional handcraft using materials such as bamboo and washi paper. The installations are made up of countless small paper kites that shift and flutter within the space and its changing light. Despite their organic, multi-layered nature, the works contain meticulously designed abstract and graphic details.

In his work, Hashimoto has i.a. explored the construction of self-awareness from nothingness—within an age of digital and visual cacophony—as a Japanese-American artist grappling with a fractured cultural heritage.
