Waking dreams and other stories

Söderlångvik, Dragsfjärd

2.5 – 14.12.2025

This year's exhibition at Söderlångvik features works by Kim Simonsson, inviting viewers into a world of imagination. The Moss Giants have taken over the manor's garden and a small restaurant room. The sculptures have returned to their natural habitat — the forest — after journeys from Lille, France, and Helsinki's Lasipalatsi Square. At Söderlångvik, the Moss Giants are truly allowed to become moss-covered and merge with the surrounding nature, blending in seamlessly.

Simonsson’s Moss Giants place us face to face with themes guided by a child’s gaze and imagination, drawing attention to nature and vegetation. Children and animals have claimed their space — on their own terms. Inside the manor, golden and bronze-like sculptures add their own sense of mischief to the refined atmosphere, transforming it with their presence into something dreamlike and unique.

Sculptor Kim Simonsson (b. 1974) is known for his bold storytelling and deep understanding of materials. Clay is his primary medium, from which he sculpts his figures, finishing them with hand-blown glass, fibers, and everyday objects. This gives his works a sense of three-dimensionality that is central to his artistic expression. Influences from anime and comic art are clearly visible in his creations.

In the 2010s, Simonsson discovered the flocking technique — a method for applying nylon fiber to surfaces. The mossy green hue, now characteristic of his Moss Giants, was discovered unexpectedly while experimenting with dark clay and nylon. This discovery opened a new artistic path, leading him into the depths of forests, mysteries, and enigmatic creatures. The artist himself refers to his characters as “anarchistic children” — figures that challenge cultural norms around acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
