Secundino Hernández en obras at Sala Alcalá 31

February 19–April 20, 2025

From February 19 to April 20, 2025, Sala Alcalá 31 presents Secundino Hernández en obras, the first institutional exhibition of the Madrid-born painter in his hometown. This retrospective offers an in-depth exploration of his nearly 30-year artistic career.

Rather than a chronological survey, the exhibition is structured around key themes in Hernández’s painting practice, featuring around 70 works ranging from 1996 to a large-scale piece from 2025. The show examines fundamental aspects of his artistic language, including drawing, surface treatment, form, and the human figure.

Divided into four sections, the exhibition highlights the importance of drawing as the foundation of painting, the role of surface as both a representational and plastic element, the evolution of form in composition, and the artist’s rare engagement with the human figure beyond abstraction. Hernández’s work results from a rigorous process where gesture and spontaneity emerge through methodical and obsessive practice.

Born in Madrid in 1975, Secundino Hernández studied at the Complutense University of Madrid and later lived in Rome, Vienna, and Berlin. His work has been exhibited in institutions such as the Meadows Museum (Dallas), CAC Málaga, Helsinki Kunsthalle, the Royal Academy of Arts (London), and YUZ Museum (Shanghai), among others. His pieces are part of collections including the Banco de España, the Rubell Family Collection (Miami), and the Friedrichs Collection (Bonn).
