Born in Kemerovo, Russia 1983 | Lives and works in Saint Petersburg and Moscow
Tanya Akhmetgalieva reveals technical skillfulness in her works, which have been produced with mixed media. She paints by sewing and mixing graphics and textile art freely. In the montage-like works produced by sewing, one can find a parallel to the modern world’s networking. The trace of stitching reflects how social media has entwined the whole world into a global fabric, as one skein. In her works, Akhmetgalieva examines the tendency of people to continuously record and share their lives’ most minute details in pictorial format. The boundaries between public and private have become fluid, and individualism is dramatically rising.
Akhmetgalieva has gained wide notoriety both in Russia and internationally. Akhmetgalieva’s works can be found in the Saastamoinen Foundation Collection at the EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art, as well as in several private collections in Europe and Russia.
Galerie Forsblom has been representing Tanya Akhmetgalieva since 2011.
