Lars-Gunnar Nordström
14.1.–6.2.2022

Lars-Gunnar Nordström (1924–2014) was a pioneering abstract artist whose paintings are characterized by their great dynamism, precision, and pristine treatment of color. His work engages in a close study of the universal laws governing the form, line, and color. These three elements are expertly orchestrated in his paintings, coming together in perfect harmony, flowing with the exact beauty of a mathematical formula. The mathematical side of his work also finds expression in its spatiality, which is the foundation of his compositions and the key hallmark of his recognizable Concretist style. Galerie Forsblom is proud to present a new exhibition focusing on Nordström’s smaller paintings. When working on a small scale, Nordström’s imagery and vivid palette gain even greater intensity.

Nordström was an influential figure on the Nordic art scene, not only as a painter but also as a teacher and writer. Before becoming a painter, Nordström studied furniture design and hoped to become an architect. In between painting, he occasionally designed furniture, stage sets and graphic identities for printed matter.

Nordström is also known for his impressive jazz collection comprising over 14,000 vinyls, which by all indications, is Finland’s largest existing collection of jazz music. Nordström often emphasized how it was important to appreciate his work without rushing: their inherent visual rhythms would then emerge as “music for the eyes”.

The exhibition is a collaboration with the L-G Nordström Foundation.
