Emma helle
Carnival of Clay
Art and Museum Centre Sinkka
October 5, 2024–January 12, 2025
Sculptor Emma Helle's ceramic sculptures are on display in a clay-themed group exhibition in Kerava. Clay is one of the most distinctive materials found in Kerava’s soil, which historically led to the establishment of several brick factories in the area. Today, Emma Helle and other artists for whom clay and ceramics serve as natural mediums of expression work within the brick-structured Klondyke House.
Helle’s sculptures feature lush figures that shift fluidly between the masculine and the feminine, their corporeality forming a continuum with the history of art. In her works, the artist explores how the human body has been depicted in the canon of Western art: certain body types have taken center stage, while others have remained in the margins.
