Jarmo Mäkilä’s retrospective is on view at Sara Hildén Art Museum in Tampere until May 28.
In a career spanning 40 years, Mäkilä has earned himself an established place as one of Finland’s foremost artists. The experimental, rule-breaking painter and sculptor has reinvented his style many times: early in his career, he combined contemporary motifs with allusions to art history, and in the 1980’s he drew inspiration from the masks of popular culture. In his recent artworks, the artist investigates the human condition by depicting the moment at which the childhood ends, and the innocence begins to falter.
