Bjarne Melgaard exhibition 2016
Born in Sydney, Australia 1967 I Lives and works in New York, USA
The compositions of Bjarne Melgaard's paintings are dominated by organized chaos, which he has materialized via the momentum of creation: acrylic paint is poured on the floor and splashed directly onto the canvas. Early in his career, Melgaard created controversial installations that referenced subcultures such as BDSM and heavy metal. His expressive paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations have achieved a unique standing in the art world, as Melgaard’s style and provocative themes have made him a controversial but acclaimed artist.
Melgaard has had numerous exhibitions in the world's leading galleries and museums, and in 2011, the artist represented Norway at the Venice Biennale. His works are included in many major museums and private collections, such as the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Rubell Family Collection, Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum, the Malmö Art Museum and the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art Collections. In addition to the visual arts, Melgaard is known, inter alia, as a curator, a fashion designer, and a writer.
