Born in Lahti, Finland 1966 | Lives and works in Turku, Finland
Known for his massive oil paintings and intense themes – including biblical motifs, self-portraits and floral still-life compositions – Heikki Marila is a leading figure on the Finnish contemporary art scene. His expressive paintings are laden with paradoxical drama: they play with contrasts, combining the spiritual, beautiful, and sublime with the carnal, corporeal and repulsive. His paintings possess a powerfully physical materiality, which is heightened by an ongoing dialogue between figurative and non-figurative elements and by his thickly applied layers of oil paint. Marila captures the intensity of 17th-century painting traditions, which he reinterprets through the lens of contemporary social and visual themes.
Marila has exhibited widely around Finland, the Nordic countries, and Europe. His works are represented in numerous notable collections, including the Sara Hildén Art Museum, the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art, and the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation Art Collection. He is the winner of the 2012 Carnegie Art Award.
Galerie Forsblom has been representing Heikki Marila since 2015.

Heikki Marila is celebrating 30 years as an artist at Laukko Manor.
Heikki Marila has turned his attention to the first stages of Finland's independence. These paintings on view in Vaasa City Art Gallery.
"Along with ART HISTORY, the two are united by a bold, even extravagant use of materials. In Marila's works, the paint literally bursts from the surface of the canvas, and Helle's figures are sensually fleshy. In both cases, the sophistication of the motifs is contrasted by the roughness of the expression."
Heikki Marila’s recent exhibition at Galerie Forsblom was such a strong experience it calls for some reflecting afterwards. His breathtaking paintings manifest a forgotten, important and fragile era in Finnish history, the Civil War of 1918. With this series of paintings Heikki Marila, one of the most prominent contemporary Finnish painters, presents the viewer with the collective blurred memories and the hidden family tragedies. Heikki wants to bring up this period while we’re approaching the celebrations of Finland’s 100-year independence.
