Portrait of Jason Martin.
Born in the Channel Islands, UK, 1970 | Lives and works in London and Portugal
Jason Martin creates masterful illusions of depth. His works are steeped in materiality, movement, and powerful physicality in a sensual way. The large-scale monochromatic sculptural paintings consist of thick surfaces of oil or acrylic gel spread on top of a reflective metal, such as aluminum, in one movement. This movement is usually repetitive until the perfect balance of paint, translucence, and striation is achieved. Martin negotiates between the boundaries of Action Painting, Minimalism, and Abstract Expressionism.
Martin follows in the footsteps of the YBA generation. He studied at the Chelsea School of Art and Goldsmith College in London from 1989 to 1993. Martin’s works have been exhibited widely in the US and Europe, including at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice in 2009 and at Centro de Arte Contemporàneo de Malaga in 2008. His works are included in numerous private and public collections worldwide, such as the Denver Art Museum, Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, and Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC.
Galerie Forsblom has been representing Jason Martin since 2012.
